Environmental Science Class visits 2nd Grade
By The Science Class
December 05, 2008
Mr. Dave Henning’s Environmental Science class ventured over to the elementary school, where they taught the second grade about compost. Students learned about how nutrients are cycled in nature by coloring pictures of different types of fruit trees.
After talking about nutrient recycling, students built their own compost bottle. The children put leaves, grass, banana peels, lettuce, and dirt into the bottles and then made observations about what they saw. The students will continue to observe their bottles, taking notes on the process of decomposition. The high school students will return to the elementary at a later date in order to talk to the children about what has happened with their bottles.
