Cast of State Qualifying One Act: Jack vs. Jill

Milford One Act Finishes Fourth at State!

Milford wins the District One Act Competition!

by Chuck Wergin

December 05, 2007

This year’s play is Jack vs. Jill written by Dustin Robert Blakeman. The play is set in a courtroom where Jack and Jill meet for the first time after that fateful day on the hill. Jack, who has a scar on his crown forever serving as a reminder of his tumble, must defend himself against Jill’s accusations of malicious hill-pushing and a settlement of over half Jack’s estate. The lawyers for the defense and prosecution work tenaciously labor to prove their sides of the case. After all the evidence and witnesses have been paraded in front of the jury, in this case you the audience. The Milford One Act has had a great season so far and there is still one competition left.  Tuesday, November 20th the cast and crews traveled to Wymore Southern and competed in the Southern Nebraska Conference One Act Competition with 9 other conference schools. At Conference the play won third place. Outstanding Acting recognition was given to Sarah Penry, Savana Riley, Brad Rediger, Clee Shy, Chase Jones, and Matt Rogge. Saturday, December 1st the cast and crews slipped and slide into Seward for the B-3 District competition. At the end of the day the Students had earned the nod as the best play bringing home the championship plaque and special recognition was given to Brad Rediger, Chase Jones, Clee Shy, Sarah Penry, and Savana Riley for their Outstanding Performance.
Mr. Nutzman has always had high expectations for such a seasoned cast. “This year’s cast is one of the most Senior dominated casts I have ever had. It made auditions for any speaking part a daunting task.” This years cast is comprised of: Chase Jones, senior, playing Jack; Savanna Riley, senior, playing the part of Jill; Brad Rediger, senior, serving as a lawyer for the defense; Sarah Penry, senior, working as the lawyer for the prosecution; Clee Shy, senior, cast as Judge Guido; Matt Rogge, senior, playing the part of Bailiff; Allison Brandt, senior, embodying the part of Mother Goose; Marisa Esch, junior, portrays the role of 911 operator Francine Noodlemeyer; Nathan Smith, senior, who narrates the story as the Mysterious Man In a Suit; Amanda Ferguson, junior, acts as the Woman In A Nice Dress; Sam Rogge and Jordan Curtis, both Sophomores, portray Two Men In White. The cast also includes a plethora of court spectators portraying some of life’s most memorable characters that have come to see which way the courts will rule in this unusual case. Students who are acting as spectators are Alicia Roth, Bryanna Arena, Jessica Roth, Justin Larsen, Karlee Koch, Brett Troyer, Lacey Lubken, Raquel Ramirez, Whitney Redler, Kourtney Robinson, and Paige McAvoy.
From the moment you see the stage settings you know that this is not set in your typical courtroom. The stage design, built by 10 students working on the stage crew putting in over 90 combine hours, have created a setting that tells you that things will be slightly askew. The actors do a wonderful job of bringing this odd fairy tale world to life as the bizarre become more and more bizarre, and the odd become just down right freaky. There are definitely many laughs to enjoy. So don’t miss this this opportunity to see the cast and crew perform an Encoré performance Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Chase Jones, Brad Rediger, Clee Shy, and Savanna Riley were recognized as outstanding actors at the state competition.
