2007 STAR Projects of Milford FCCLA Members
by Whitney Danekas and Ariel Heckman
January 11, 2007
Milford FCCLA members are doing STAR Projects once again this year. STAR stands for Students Taking Action with Recognition. A student who decides to do a STAR Project can either do it by themselves or in a group of people. STAR Projects include many different categories that can be picked from, but only certain categories allow a student to go on to the state level of competition. The categories that are being presented by FCCLA members this year, that can be presented at state level are Illustrated Talk by Alicia Roth, Focus on Children by Andy Kontor and Cayle Burroughs, and Career Investigation by Ashley Stutzman.
Alicia Roth is doing her project on candy and its effects on the body. Andy Kontor and Cayle Burroughs are doing theirs on bullying and coping skills young elementary students should develop.
A presentation usually includes large posters or poster boards that are filled with pictures and information about the presenter’s project. A speech is given to two or more judges within a certain time limit (time limit depends on what category) and presenters refer to their posters throughout their speech. The speech needs to include the FCCLA planning process in which the presenter must Identify a Concern, Set a Goal, Form a Plan, Act on the Plan, and Follow Up.
Milford’s FCCLA STAR participants will present their projects at FCCLA District Convention in Fairbury on January 15th. The participants will be competing against ten other schools, vying for the top gold medal to advance to the State FCCLA Convention. During the time between districts and state competition, the top gold winners will have the chance to make any changes to their project that will earn them a better score at the FCCLA State Convention.
